Persuasive Writing: Happy Father's Day!

We showed the dads some love as we worked hard learning how to write organized essays that persuaded our readers that OUR Dad was the best!  Outlining is such an important skill to have.  If students can outline, they can quickly turn their outline, which is in notes form, into an organized essay.  Our outlines for this project looked like this:

I. Intro: Thesis (Something like, "My dad is the greatest dad in the world.")

        A. Reason #1

        B. Reason #2

        C. Reason #3

II. Reason #1 with evidence

III. Reason #2 with evidence

IV. Reason #3 with evidence

V. Conclusion- a very persuasive sentence to end the writing

I was told all dads LOVED their essay gifts.  Tyler (rising 7th grader) offered to share his letter with the world!

    The Best Dad Ever

I am so lucky to have such a loving dad.  For example, he coaches my baseball team.  My dad also plays with me and jokes around with me.  Everyone should have a dad like mine.

My dad has been coaching my team since I was five.  He helps me get better so I can reach my goals.  My dad also asks me if I want to practice.  He also asks me if I need new batting gloves and other equipment.  All of this will help me to make it to the Major Leagues one day.

My dad also plays with me.  He sometimes plays video games with me when he gets home from work.  My dad also plays board games with me.  He wants to spend time with me by playing with me.  This makes me feel happy.

My dad also makes me laugh.  He does this because he loves making me happy.  My dad also chooses movies for us to watch together.  I love it so much when my dad makes me laugh and smile.

Clearly, my dad is the best I could ask for.

Using Voice: Letters from Backwards Land

This project was a favorite of my groups.  First, they spelled a vacation destination spot backwards.  (Mrs. Huff went to Adirolf, which is the opposite of its sunny, beach-filled destination and instead is a cold, festive land where it snows every night.). Then, they were to write a story map about an adventure they had in that land based on what their place was like.  Finally, and this is where the challenge came in, they drew moods/tones out of a bag.  The challenge was to write a story with that voice, even if it didn't match the story!

For example, Lucas (rising 6th grader) brainstormed a pretty negative story where he got hurt and had to go to the hospital.  He also got severely bitten by ants.  This would've been an easy story to write if he had drawn the mood "angry" or "grumpy."

But no!  Lucas drew:

JUBILANT.

I hope you enjoy his story, and the others you see here!

Dear Tyler,

Of course, this letter will go to someone whom I've known for about a week.  I will tell you about this glorious trip to Ylati!

First, I got off of the beautiful submarine, only to faint from the heat.  It was really great, because I've never fainted before, so it was a new experience.  I did have to spend four hours in the hospital, but the bed was comfy, and it was cool to see all the tools!

After I got out of the hospital, I got to gloriously walk to my hotel.  After a bit of relaxing, I got up to go to the hotel's famous restaurant, Taedelle.  I sat down and ordered tacos.  The tacos were really good, considering this is a breakfast-making country.

After the food, I went to my room and plopped on my comfy bed.  At 5:00 am, Big Ben woke me up.  The loud dings were so nice to awaken to!  After that, I walked to the Aardvark Zoo.  I saw many animals, such as the Jacketdeer, Dippo, and many more.  When I went to the tree section, I got bitten by a fire ant.  It was so cool to see how such a small insect could cause that much pain!

After that, I went back to the submarine.  Some may say that this was a bad trip, but this trip was actually awesome!  I wish you were here to experience this place with me.

                                                            From, Lucas

Jeff (rising 6th grader) TOTALLY ROCKED this voice!:

CHILL/SURFER

'Sup Dad,

I'm writing to you cuz my trip is totally tubular!  I'm chilling in Iuauk.  The plane ride here was awesome; I almost died!  Then I went to my hotel, and it has a 0.0001 star review!  The hotel is called Donkey Letoh, dude.  (I think it's French.)

Anyway, I got there at like 2:00 am, and I'm like, "Dude, where is my room key?"  And they were like, "The hotel isn't open until 7:30 am."  And I'm like, "Okay, Bruh."

Then I went snow boarding, which is just like surfing, but instead of water, it's snow.  Then I made the most radical snowman ever, dude.  Tomorrow I'm going to climb Mt. Uglushhicula, the tallest mountain in the world.  It'll be epic!

I wish you could be here, dude.

                                                                Love, Jef

(Jeff removed an "f" from his name, because he thought it was a cool dude thing to do.)

Vivienne (rising 6th grader) ALSO got:

CHILL/SURFER.  Her postcard is righteous, dude!

No matter what happens in Aivy's (rising 8th grader) story, she remains so positive!  Can you find her tone in this well-written postcard story?

Natalie (rising 7th grader) chose to do a travel journal in a wonderful mood!

Dear Travel Journal,

Today, I arrived in Napaj!  All of the people here are very nice and welcoming. So far, my time here in Napaj has been quite wonderful.

Unfortunately, this trip did not start off on a good note. My flight was scheduled for 9pm, but it got delayed many times, so it didn’t take off until 12pm. By the time I arrived, it was early in the morning. However, as soon as I stepped off the plane, I was greeted with a gentle spring breeze and a bright sunrise. As I was taking a taxi to my hotel, I looked out the window and caught my first view of the city. All around me, I could see old, fairytale-like buildings. The town is so cute and quaint!

Once I had arrived at my hotel and seen the beautiful lands surrounding it, I immediately decided to have a picnic for breakfast. While I was eating, I could hear birds singing all around me. Then I noticed the sound of running water. I packed up and went to investigate. A little behind the hotel, I found a brook with a bridge built over it. I would have drawn a picture of it, but at that moment, it started to rain!  I rushed back to my cozy hotel room and watched the rain fall from my window. It was pouring cats and dogs! Fortunately, I had brought a book with me, so I read for the rest of the day.

Luckily for me, the rain has stopped today. Eager to go sightseeing, I visited an old castle this morning. The air was crisp and clean. Above me, there was a lovely rainbow. The castle itself was quite majestic. There were many towers and the bridge that led to it was huge. It was surrounded by curious red trees that have big white flowers all over them. They smelled strangely of honey and vanilla!

Next, I took a quick ferry ride to get to a festival I wanted to go to. I enjoyed the spray of water and wind that I felt while holding tightly to the railing. When I got to the market, my breath was taken away. All around me I could see bright colors. There were flowers, food, and more in every imaginable shade. Also, I could hear singing, talking, and joyful shouting everywhere I went. I was so engrossed in exploring the markets that I lost track of time. By the time I was back in my room, it was well into the night!

Tomorrow, I plan on exploring the city some more and trying a popular desert known as ihsagaw. I love Napaj and am already thinking about my next trip here!

Love,

Natalie ♡

"How To" Writing: My Least Favorite Chore

Painting a Perfect Picture in the reader's mind doesn't always just mean adjectives.  Verbs are important too!  In this lesson, we explored the art of "how to" writing, and what better way to inspire the students than to send them on vacation and have them leave their teacher a letter with specific instructions on how to do their least favorite chore?

After going over a list of effective guide words, the students organized their letters in the form of introduction, body (the directions section), and conclusion.  Clearly, I've got my work cut out!  Luckily, I can picture how to do these chores just perfectly thanks to these awesome writers.

Dear Mrs. Huff,

I have gone to New Guinea to get a new guinea pig.  But, I have forgotten to put away the laundry!  If I don't do this, my parents will kill me!  You will have to help me!

First, you need to go to the laundry room and get the black basket from under the counter.  Then, go to my room and go to the white closet to the left.  All the clothes are already folded, so now you just have to put them away.

First, you need to put away the shirts.  They go in the middle drawer.  Next, you have to put the pants away.  They have to go in the drawer above the shirts.

Now you have to put away the socks.  They go in a box in the drawer under the shirts.  Then you have to put away the jackets in the top drawer above all the other drawers.  Finally, you have to put the swimsuits next to the box with the socks in it.

Thank you so much for helping me!  I knew a good friend like you could help me.  Just make sure not to tell anyone.

                                                            Sincerely, Ben

                                                               (rising 6th grader)

 Dear Mrs. Huff,

I hope you are doing well. I’m going to climb a tree. Since it's 374 feet tall, I'll be up there for a couple of weeks. We have a person to come by and feed and take out the dogs, but nobody to bathe the dogs so it will need to be you.

When you go into the house, Woola will be in the crate, and Nautica will be on her bed. Open Woola’s crate by turning the latch to the right. First, get the dog shampoo in the laundry room. On the left hand side in a big plastic container, it will say “dog shampoo.” Then, grab both the yellow and the pink brush in the shoe shelf in the garage. It should be on the left side in a rope basket. Also bring a towel. Towels can be found in my parents' bathroom, which is next to their bedroom. Bring a towel that is big enough to cover one of the dogs. Take these materials to the first shower in the pool house. On the way out grab the blue treat bag that is hanging on the wall.

Turn the top lever in the shower towards the left to turn it on, and turn the lower lever towards the left for hot and right for cold. Make it medium. This shower takes a while to warm up, so bring one of the dogs in and close the door. Make sure to use lots of treats and a sweet voice to get them in. Please wash Nautica first, otherwise she will worry too much, and be even more scared when it's her turn. They will probably try to hide in the corner of the shower, so just unhook the shower head by lifting up and out.

First, get the dogs wet by moving the shower head up and down their body;make sure to do belly, legs, neck, and tail as well. Do not do the head. Once they are completely wet, grab the dog shampoo and squeeze a glob onto your hand. Scrub everywhere that's wet to get them nice and soapy. When they are soapy enough, rinse them off by rubbing back and forth to get the soap off. Once the shampoo is completely gone, wait for them to shake and get lots of water off and then rub the towel all over them until they don’t drip. They always get a bit crazy after baths so let them run around on the green turf until they are tired out.

Now for the brushing. Bring them to the front of the house or back so it doesn’t go in the house. Take the pink brush first and rub everywhere to get the hair loose, use commands such as down, sit, and stand to make it easier. Then take the yellow brush and lightly brush along their hair to get the rest off. Repeat this process till there is a layer of fur on the ground. Put the supplies where you found them and bring Nautica to the bed and Woola into the crate by using treats. Use the Bed command for Nautica and Crate command for Woola. Lock the crate by turning the lever to the left, pushing it in, and then turning it to the right. Close the door behind you and you are good to go. See you in a month!

From the bottom of my heart,

Marissa (rising 7th grader)

Dear Mrs. Huff,

I am having a wonderful day in Bora Bora. Unfortunately, I left for the island without taking care of one super important chore. I forgot to put away the fresh groceries. During my month in Bora Bora, I'm sure that the groceries will rot. Your reward for completing this task is one wish, granted.

First, clean your hands. Use the hand sanitizer on the right side of the microwave above the refrigerator. After you use it, open the brown paper bag located on the floor in front of the refrigerator. Inside the bag are raisins, crackers, apples, grapes, sparkling water, eggs, and meat.

Now, your work begins. Place the raisins and crackers inside their designated container. The two containers are in the second cupboard of the pantry, which is connected to the laundry room. Next, the apples and grapes from the paper bag need to be inside the drawer titled "Fruits/Vegetables." This specific drawer is inside the refrigerator.

Almost done. The sparkling water needs to be organized inside the cellar. If you walk through the hallway with the bathroom, the first thing on your right side is the cellar. There should be sodas inside. Please lock the door using the key that is hanging on the doorknob. As the last steps, place the eggs in the plastic egg carton inside the refrigerator and throw the meat in the freezer.

You may chuck the brown paper bag in the metal recycling can sitting on the floor in front of the sink, so that it doesn’t smell. That’s it! I will see you in a month to grant your wish. You’re the best!

The best,

Sylvie (rising 8th grader)

Dear Mrs. Huff,

I am going on a tropical vacation to the Maldives for several days, and before I left, I forgot to do one very important chore. it is a really gross and stinky chore, but you might get a free workout out of it. I forgot to empty and bring the garbage back to the house from the bottom of the hill on Friday.

First, in the kitchen, the garbage and recycling bags need to be changed. Could you please empty the bins out and put new garbage bags in them? The bags are located under the utensils drawer near the Ziploc bags. The garbage bags are black. Once the new bags are replaced, put the old bags into the garbage cans in front of the garage. The recycle goes into the blue can, and the garbage goes into the gray can.

After the bags go into the correct cans, you can come back into the house and relax. You can either watch television in the living room, play ping pong by yourself, go outside or just lie around. But, my parents' room and the office are off-limits. You may not go into those two rooms; other than that, you are free to roam around as you please. Another rule is to not make a mess. When I come back, there should be no crumbs or food on the counter. If you happen to spill, use the paper towels and Windex, which are both located in the kitchen. The paper towels are near the stove, and the cleaning supplies are in the cabinet under the sink, closest to the window. While you are relaxing, every now and then please look outside of the window and check if the garbage man/woman has picked up the trash.

Once he/she has picked up the trash, walk to the bottom of the hill and get the trash. The compost bins will have already been there, so you just need to put the compost bins in the front yard. After, bring the recycle and garbage cans all the way up the hill. Since the hill is very steep, so a tip is to run up the hill with both bins so you only have to take one trip.

After the garbage cans are back in front of the garage, you may leave. I know from experience how hard this job is, so your reward is another healthy sea salt chocolate bar (because I know you LOVE them), and I will join another workshop. Thanks a bunch!

                                Sincerely, Ella (rising 6th grader)

It looks like Mrs. Huff is in for a chore-filled summer!!

Descriptive Writing: Pool Toy Draw

In the fall, we play "Monster Draw."  In the winter, "Snowman Draw."  So for summer, we play "Pool Toy Draw!"  This descriptive writing game with a partner emphasizes the use of adjectives to create the perfect picture in our readers' minds, which is really what good writing is all about.

Here's How You Play:

Step 1: Draw a very creative pool toy.  It can be something that has never been seen before!

Step 2: Write a very thorough description, broken down into paragraphs, describing your pool toy to the very last detail. Because....

Step 3: Exchange descriptions with a partner, and try to draw theirs as they draw yours with no talking or last-minute corrections!

Winners are voted on by the class, and receive a small pool toy and blog honors.  Enjoy these entertaining pieces!

Bobby's Pool Toy (rising 6th grader)

My pool toy is a huge canon that shoots people into the water.

First, make an imaginary line down the middle.  Second, draw two medium circles to the right of the imaginary line on the ground.  Those are the wheels.  Third, make a smaller circle inside the two circles.  Fourth, color the space in between the two circles black, and draw a line connecting the two wheels/circles.  Fifth, go to the left side of the left wheel and start to draw a straight line to the top left corner, but stop after about two inches.  Sixth, go to the top of the right wheel and draw a one inch line upwards.  Seventh, draw a three inch line parallel to the line going to the corner.  Eight, draw a skinny oval connecting the top line to the bottom line, completing the shape/cannon body.  (This was really hard to explain!). Ninth, draw a little head with a smiley face sticking out of the cannon.  Tenth, color the cannon body brown and leave the oval white.  Finally, draw a curly line coming out the top of the cannon, so that's the fuse.  The top of the curly line has a little flame coming out.

On the left side of the imaginary line, draw a pool for the little man to land in.  Then draw a line with chunks taken out of it directing where the person is going to be shot.

In the top left corner, draw a yellow sun.  In the other top corner, draw a cloud.

Now it should look like a man is being shot out of a canon.  If it doesn't.... oh well.

Bobby described this so clearly!  James (rising 6th grader) produced this match!

Dylan's Pool Toy (Rising 6th grader)
My pool toy is unique.  First, you need to draw an original doughnut-shaped float.  It should be big, around the size of your hand, taking up a bit less than 1/3 of the page.  Color it forest green, and color the center hole with your pencil.

Now, draw a medium-sized yellow circle at the front, or top part of the doughnut.  This is a head.  Inside of the yellow head, draw a smiley face, with black small eyes and a mouth.  Do not draw a nose.  Think of a clock.  The doughnut is the center, and the head we just drew is at the 12 o' clock.  Now, draw an identical head at the 3 o'clock spot.  The only difference is now it is gray and has a neutral, or bored face.  It should be colored gray, and its mouth should be a horizontal line.  Next, draw a blue sad face the same way at 6 o'clock.  And finally, draw a red angry face at 9 o' clock.  Its eyebrows should be a "v" shape, and its mouth a gray/black circle.

For the final touch, add four long light green squiggly pool noodles in between the heads.  Now you are done drawing my pool toy.

Dylan wrote so carefully, especially about the colors and faces!  Tyler (rising 7th grader) was able to draw this twin toy!

AnaRose's Pool Toy (Rising 7th grader)

My pool toy is an animal donut.  Its head is a wide oval shape.  It has two bear-like ears on the top, about an inch distance apart.  For both ears, you will draw an inner part like an upside down U.  Make sure that there is still space between the inner ear and the edge of the ear.  For the left ear, the inner section is black, and the rest is white.  For the left ear, the inner section is black, and the rest is white.  For the right, the inner is white while the rest is black.  For the face itself, you will draw two lines (making three spaces) horizontally across the face.  They should be evenly set apart.  For the top space, make it black, and leave the middle white.  For the last space, put a line in the middle and make the left black, and leave the right half white.  For the middle section, create circle glasses roughly in the center of that section.  Each ring should be about half an inch apart.  Just make a black line connecting the two rings and a line on the other side towards the end of the face slightly upward.  For the ring, create an upside-down U inside.  It's a gentle U, so don't make it a strict upside-down U.  For the left ring, shade it red and the other green.  Color over the upside-down U.  Those serve as eyes.  Now just outline everything in black.

For the body, you have a short neck that curves into the belly.  Once you make the belly (not too big or two long), create the donut shape connected to the belly!  You can see the long hole of it, but you cannot see into it directly.  We are facing it sideways.  In the middle of the hole (on the edge of course), create bee-like wings, short and plump.  There are two for each set.  However, the further one on the back you can only see the left one completely.  For the right, you can only see a bit that peeks over the front left wing.  At the end of it, there is a fox/raccoon-like tail.  It's puffy and a bout an inch long; maybe a little longer.  It is going a bit downwards, but not completely vertical.

Now, draw two horizontal lines through the tail, making three spaces.  The middle space is black and the others are white.  Back to the body: make seven lines, making either space, and try and make them evenly apart.  But the space near the end will be the smallest.  The color pattern will be white-black-white-black, and make sure that the last space (back of the body) is black.  Also, make sure that the lines don't go through the hole!  This part is before you color the body.  (I forgot to write this part beforehand!). Right underneath the chin is a red bandana.  It goes down almost to the middle, but not quite on each side (bottom of chin).  The little fabric ties are shown.  They are red.  For the bee wings, they are a plain gray.  Once you finish this, outline the whole body with black.

Now for the background, we are in an inside pool area.  The curb of the pool is very thin, and it goes across the whole page horizontally and is about underneath the chin of the pool toy.  It's a butter yellow color.  The pool has five indigo blue small waves.  Top right, middle, top left, bottom left, and bottom right have these.  The rest of the pool is a light blue.  The wall has two windows.  The left one starts at the left ear (between the spaces of the top edge of the paper, and the ear, same as the right window, expect it's the tail) and ends right before the right ear.  It's about an inch an a half tall.  The inside has a line going horizontally and vertically; they meet in the middle of the window.  The right window starts where the tail meets the body, and ends where the tail ends.  Outline the windows in black, and leave the wall completely white.  And THAT is my pool toy!

Wow!  That is a thorough description!  The class voted that Nicolyn (rising 7th grader) and AnaRose were victorious, because the only difference they could find was the huge head.  :)

Summer Workshop Time! Paragraph Game

It is always so fun to plan a summer workshop.  The genres of writing can stay the same or differ slightly than the school year, but the environment is pleasant, relaxing, and almost vacation-like.  (Who DOESN"T write while on vacation?!)

Summer workshops this year are in backyards or via Zoom, and I will continue to add entertaining reads to this section of the blog all summer long.

The first assignment we open up with is a Paragraph Writing Partner Game.   The kids first partner up with someone who shares a similar interest in topics.  Topics vary, but always have a summer theme.  For example:

~The Best Thing About Summer

~The Best Theme Park

~The Best Roller Coaster

~The Best Video Games

~Sunburns

~School (previous grade)

and more!

Then, they roll the dice or draw numbers.  The number they get corresponds with a sentence pattern they must use as the next step in their paragraph.  Examples may be:

~Use two vivid adjectives

~Start your sentence with an attention-getting adverb

~Use a dependent clause that tells where or when

~Vary your punctuation

~Start your sentence with a "Because"

and more!

These rising 6th-7th graders wow'd me with their vocabulary and their teamwork.  See if you can spot what makes each sentence unique.  Enjoy!

Summer

by Beckham and Benjamin (rising 6th graders)

The burning heat scorched my skin as I jumped into the cooling waters of the poo.  Calmingly, I floated through the pool, letting go of all responsibilities I had during the school year.  I got out of the pool to dry off, but I got attacked by the vicious pool cleaner.  As the pool cleaner attacked me, I screamed at the top of my lungs.  It' going to be a long summer!

Roller Coasters

By Bobby and Ori (rising 6th graders)

Roller coasters are the best!  This has been proven by Lucas who said, "Roller coasters are fun!"  Obviously, roller coasters are extreme.  When people get on the ride, they shoot up at lightning speeds, and swerve down doing loops and going upside-down.  As they enter the station, a man in a hat throws up, and the people get out of the ride desperately trying to get away from him.  Clearly, if roller coasters make people puke, they're the best.

The Best Vacation Destination

by Nicolyn (rising 7th grader), Ella (rising 6th grader), and Vivienne (rising 6th grader)

Clearly, Hawaii is the most incredible destination in the U.S.  Playful dolphins surround these Hawaiian islands.  Because of this, you experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with these magnificent creatures and many others.  It does not only have dolphins; it has many other creatures, such as the tiger shark or the green sea turtle.  Ella declares that, "Whether you're swimming with the dolphins, playing with the turtles,, or snorkeling with the tiger sharks, Hawaii is obviously the best travel destination!"
