The week of St. Patrick's Day, I proposed a story line to my students:
What if they had all the luck in the world? Nothing could go wrong. They couldn't lose, get hurt, or get in trouble. What would their day look like?
After a brief story map of beginning, middle, and end, the students wrote short stories from the 1st person perspective. They had to come up with a creative way to receive their luck, and tell the reader how they knew their luck was over.
I thought it was neat to see that there are some types of luck that all students would want if they had the chance! See if you can spot the similar themes. Enjoy these samples from across the grades!
My Lucky Day, by Momo (2nd grade)
One St. Patrick's Day, I found a four leaf clover, and inside the four leaf clover was a leprechaun! He gave me a wish. I wished for him to distract my parents, so they couldn't notice that I was watching TV. I watched my favorite movies, and even popped some popcorn. Also, I got a phone call that my friend Sara also had a lucky day.
I knew my luck was over when the leprechaun ran away.
Lucky Day, by Yanbing (4th grade)
One morning, I was walking in a forest and saw a flash of light. I went to the light, and there was a leprechaun! He threw me a golden coin, and it hit me in the head. It didn't hurt! I knew this was going to be my luckiest day yet!
First, I was going to try volleyball. I did all the moves and, surprisingly, I did them all very well! My mom said, "When did you become so good?" But I didn't tell her the secret.
Next, I asked my mom if I could do anything I wanted. My mom said, "Of course! Why didn't you ask sooner?" I played for about an hour, then I decided to drive my car. I brought some money, and I drove anywhere I desired. I ate at restaurants, went to ice cream stores, and finally came back.
When I came back, I wanted to make Puff, my cat, like me. I picked her up, and amazingly, she din't struggle! She even licked my hand! I watched a movie with her on my lap, and checked the time. 7:30. So I still had a lot of time left!
I convinced my parents to buy me a scratch lottery ticket. I scratched it off. "Aw, man... wait.... I'm rich! I'm RICH!" I gave it to the cashier, and got ten billion dollars. Now I was really rich!
Next, I persuaded my parents to cancel today's music practice. I went to my room and played all I could.
But then, the sun set, and suddenly, my luck was gone!
Lucky Day, by Charlize (5th grade)
One day, a small, weird dude came up to me and poured gold sparkles on my toes. I suspected he was a lephrechaun . But, I didn't know why the heck he would pour gold sparkles on my toes.
"You shall have all the good luck in the world for 24 hours. I will come back here when the day is done."
"Thank you!" I shouted back as he walked away.
Since the whole day would bring good luck, I decided to enter the lottery. I set my goal on a million bucks.
I entered, and as I scratched the ticket, I feared that the magic would not work. But then I won! I ran to the cashier, and then he gave me my money. I walked home to put my money in my room.
I decided to test my luck some more, so I went to the gym and did some super hard gymnastics. I did a back tuck (back flip). Then, as I flipped in the air, I was scared to land. But then my feet touched the ground and I landed. Of course I did, with my good luck! I did some more. I went on the bars, beam, and lastly, the vault. With all my luck, I never got hurt. After gymnastics, I went to the field for some soccer with my friends.
Soccer with friends went swimmingly. My team and I were playing, and the game was tied 5-5. Then, I shot the winning goal! "SCCCOOOORRREE!" my team and I shouted. The other team congratulated us as we complimented them. Aftre the game, I went home to a surprise.
The leprechaun had come back. I knew what that meant: my lucky day had come to an end. The leprechaun poured black sparkles on my toes like he had promised.
"Your lucky day has come to an end!" he said.
"I understand," I admitted sorrowfully. "But thank you for your offer," I said with grace.
"Good bye!" the leprechaun said, as he ran off into the forest.
I went home. Sad, but I had to admit, I had an amazing day.
My Lucky Day
by Anay (5th grade)
On February 29th, I got infinite luck from a magical four leaf clover bush, which disappeared as soon as I tried to pick it. Here is what I did on my special day!
First, I was in San Diego for the Surf Cup Tournament and I destroyed all the soccer teams in the tournament, 100-0. The teams we played were supposed to be the best in the country, but I scored 75 goals and got 25 assists per game, so I was the Most Valuable Player!!
Next, I went home after an easy day of winning the hardest tournament and started to play Hypixel Skyblock. I defeated 100 Revenant Horror Tier 5s and obtained 100 Warden Hearts. I completed 1,000 Floor 6 and 7 runs and luckily attained all the best RNG drops, completed 100 runs of Master Mode 7 and got Shiny Wither Pieces, Shiny Necron’s Handles, and Dark Claymore. Then, I decided to start up some speed runs because of my luck and guess what? I destroyed the record by 5 minutes! So finally, I played Hypixel Bedwars and got #1 in all the leaderboards and beat Manhal_IQ in a 1v1.
Finally, I entered one lottery ticket for every lottery in the world, which was about $500,000,000 average per lottery, and I won all of them! At that point, I was confused about my luck, and was starting to think I could do anything… including becoming the richest person in the world who has a net worth of 420 billion dollars.
Finally, when the day was about to end, I decided to go zip lining. BUT….
At that exact moment…
I felt a feeling I hadn’t experienced all day: FEAR. I intrinsically knew that my luck had ended. I got to keep everything from my lucky day, so that was a big plus!
And I’m really glad I didn’t go zip lining, because who knows what could’ve happened?!
