St. Patrick's Day Luck

My older students were given a few different prompts right around St. Patrick's Day.

If you had all the luck in the world, what would you do? You can't get hurt, you can't get in trouble, and you can't lose. What would your day look like?

or

Tell a story about a leprechaun's day on March 17th. Have a clear beginning, middle, and end, and describe what happens vividly!

or

Write a St. Patrick's Day story from the perspective of a leprechaun!

Enjoy these stories from across the grades.

My Very Lucky Day, by Pauline (4th grade)

One Sunday on St. Patrick’s day, I woke up and found a four leaf clover on the edge of my shelf. I picked it up, and wondered, “Is this a fake one?” But then something happened that never would have happened on any ordinary day. I put down the clover on my drawer and went down to breakfast, and instead of seeing healthy Cheerios, there were Froot Loops on the table.

I wondered if this was some sort of trick, but then I remembered the four leaf clover that was lying on my drawer. I picked it up and thought that it was really real after all. My mom called me down for breakfast, and I got to eat the delicious Froot Loops that I had only had once in my life.

Then, my mom said that she would drive me to my friend Ellie’s house. Then another friend of mine named Lola came! I had never felt so lucky.

Things just got better soon! After we played hide and seek, catch-the-sheep, tag, find-the-duck, and ate snacks, her parents  bought us tickets to Great America. While we were there, we got to go on all the rides that we love, and we even got to eat dippin’ dots! It was a really yummy type of ice cream.

After we got exhausted and went home, I got to play Kirby and the Forgotten Land on Nintendo Switch with my dad. After about 30 minutes of playing, I ate pizza, salad, and coke! I played board games with my parents and won every time, and then in the middle of the 5th game, my dad’s phone rang. He went out of the room to answer it. When he came back, he was beaming. He told us that he got a promotion at work and that we now had a few billion dollars! As a celebration, he let me invite Ela over for a sleepover and let us stay up late playing with each other.

The next morning, I woke up and went downstairs, expecting Froot Loops again. But then I realized that the four leaf clover was gone. And there was my bowl of Cheerios!

Saint Patrick’s Day, by Ela (4th grade)

This was my luckiest day ever! You probably want to know how this happened….

On a hot summer day, On Saint Patrick’s Day, in a patch of shade, and in the morning, I was picking clovers to make a garland. Suddenly, I saw a FOUR LEAF clover! In great excitement, I rushed home, and placed my clover safely in the middle of my desk. I just realized I was really hungry, so I went for breakfast. I was surprised to see pancakes and a banana smoothie instead of my usual oatmeal.

I was suspicious and very surprised at why this had happened, but I suddenly remembered that I found a four - leaf clover. Extremely hungry, I ate the delicious breakfast rapidly. It was the best breakfast ever!

Next, my mom drove me over to my best friend Pauline’s home. I played with her for 2 hours! We played on her Nintendo Switch, hide - and - seek, tag, and lots of other fantastic, fun games! We also ate snacks and drinks. Halfway through us playing, my other friend, Elizabeth, came over! I was having the best time.

Then, my dad told me he had created a new and useful device named a Time - a - Tron! Everyone was amazed by his genius, and his boss promoted him to the highest level, and gave him 3 million dollars! We were rich!

This was just the start! After my play date, I was wishing I could see my cousin, and suddenly, free tickets to go on a plane to Arizona flew in the window of our car, and Arizona is where my cousin lives! I LOVE visiting my cousin, he’s very fun to play with and be around, and he’s kind. We had an AWESOME time there! We teased his little sister, had parties, went to arcades, and ate lots of ice cream and sweets!

Next, very tired, we flew back, and I got to watch 3 hours of TV!! I watched my favorite show, which is anime. Then, I had a nice, cozy dinner with my parents, and we had some of my favorite foods, which were sushi, salmon with teriyaki sauce and sticky rice, pizza, boba, and to top it all off, dessert! For dessert we had some Indian desserts and sweets, cake, flan, warm, soft, sugary churros, and many more!

Finally, tired out, I cuddled up in my warm, cozy bed and fell into a deep sleep.

The next day, I woke up full of excitement, remembering yesterday. But, to my sadness and shock, I went to breakfast to find my usual, bland, boring oatmeal waiting for me. Suddenly, I remembered that all this had happened because of the four leaf clover. I rushed to my room to see if my four leaf clover was okay. The four leaf clover was GONE! I was stunned!

By then, I realized my luck lasted for only one day. I was extremely sad. But, oh well, it was nice when it lasted. Though, I wish it would happen again.

 Do you think it will?

Bad Luck by Chloe (5th grade)

Everyone knows that leprechauns love pranking people, especially on St. Patrick’s Day. But this year, the leprechaun company recruited a new worker, Bob. This year a poor little girl will have to deal with Bob’s-annoying tricks and pranks.

Anya is peacefully sleeping on March 16, but at midnight the cute little new leprechaun, Bob starts his pranking off with a big bang. When Anya wakes up she slowly makes her way to the restroom, and when she looks in the mirror she screams, “AHHH, I’m GREEN!” Anya quickly turns on the faucet and tries to rinse it off, but even with all the soap and scrubbing, it doesn't come off!

After she puts on tons of scarves and ski masks, she starts to walk down the stairs. But the stairs had mouse traps on each step!

When she finally gets to the kitchen, she opens the cereal and sees snakes! She screams, but quickly realizes that they are just fake and rubber.

As Anya is walking to school, she sees a pretty little butter-yellow colored bird flying in the sky. Just a few moments later, that same pretty little bird poops and it lands on her hair!

At school, Anya quickly runs into the locker room and tries to get the bird poop off her hair, but no matter what she did it wouldn't come off!

It’s English class, and Anya is getting bored out of her mind! Before she falls asleep, she asks the teacher if she can use the restroom. The teacher, mrs. L, approves and as she stands up, and stands up, and stands up………. SHE IS STUCK TO THE CHAIR! The entire class stares as she tries and tries, again and again to get up. But she just couldn’t pull herself away from the chair. Eventually, Mrs. L calls the janitor, and he doesn't seem incredibly happy to pull a little girl off her chair.

When the Janitor finally pulls her off the chair with a screwdriver, Anya starts walking back home. On the way home she was SUPER paranoid. But nothing happens. At dinner, Anya is scared out of her mind! But nothing happens..

But right as she starts to make herself comfortable in bed, she hears a small noise from the floor. “Helloooooo! Down here!!” Anya looks down and sees a little green leprechaun. She is about to start screaming at the little green leprechaun, but once she sees the HUGE pot of gold behind him she becomes quiet. “Hi Anya. I am here to congratulate you for being such a good sport with a pot of gold,” says the leprechaun. Anya replies. “Thank you so much.” But the leprechaun was gone, and when Anya gets a closer look at her new fortune, she realizes it’s FAKE!

A Day in the Life of a Leprechaun, by Sara (6th grade)

I wake up to buttery sunlight spilling through my window, covering my small room in a feeling that seems to melt across my sheets. My alarm clock buzzes and jumps as it repeats over and over.

"Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!" in a voice of my annoying little sister Saoirse.

I rub my eyes as they adjust to the blinding light. Suddenly, my younger brother Cillian comes sprinting into my room and leaps onto my shamrock decorated blankets.

"Rowan! Get out of bed! Don't you know what day it is? It's Saint Patrick's Day!"

My mind immediately wakes up from its sleep as I remember today is the day I have been preparing for for the past eight years! Today is the day that will make history as my first day of being a leprechaun on Saint Patrick's Day.

"Thanks for reminding me, buddy," I say to Cillian as I scoop him off of my bed and on to the ground.

Sorry. I may have been going too fast. First things first: I am a leprechaun. Well, almost. Each year, ten 12-year olds get chosen to be a leprechaun on this special day. Thankfully, I got chosen! Since I was four, I have been training for this day. Today I will be going through traps, pinching people, utting coins at the end of the rainbow, eating some delicious food in Ireland for dinner, and then coming home.

I start off my day by skipping to the kitchen, reaching into the cabinet, and pulling out... Honey Nut Cheerios! Everyone says we like Lucky Charms, but all leprechauns agree they taste like cardboard. I walk over to the fridge and grab the orange juice to put on my cereal. I know it sounds gross, but it is actually amazing.

After finishing my breakfast, I go back to my room and put on my traditional leprechaun outfit. As I reach to get my hat, I see a piece of paper with a checklist. The first point on the list is going through traps. From my years of school, I know that the traps people make are as easy as pie.

As I get ready to leave, I sprinkle some Lucky Charm dust on myself (even though it is gross), so I can fly. When I reach the first house, I go inside to see a tiny little cardboard box with a slide. How pathetic! After I jig through that trap, I reach my second house, which is basically teh same situation. Through the rest of the morming, I go through traps. Then, on my last one, I see a whole room filled with advanced technology. Must have been some engineer who made that one.

Finally after practically walking through traps, I pull out my piece of paper to check off the first task. My eyes scroll down the list to see the second task: Pinch people.

Using the dust, I fly all the way to New York City, where there are surely people not wearing green. As soon as I arrive in the huge city, I glide through the air, pinching everyone I see NOT wearing green.

After hours of pinching people, I take out my list to check off the second task. When I look down, I see that the next job is to put gold at the end of the rainbow. From my lessons at school, I know that the best place to get gold is in New York City, so I make a quick stop at a couple places to collect some gold. Along the way, water starts drizzling from the clouds, soaking me and everyone else. Just as I'm about to go to another place to find a rainbow, the sun starts peeking through the clouds, forming a large semi-circle of colors.

"Yaaaayy!" I exclaim, excited that the rainbow is so close.

With my gold, I leap onto the rainbow and slide down until I fly off at the end. With my gold, I reach the bottom and gently place the sparkly, precious metal at the tip.

"Third task done!" I say out loud, checking off the third box.

As I look at the sky, hues of orange, pink, red, yellow, and purple come together, forming a perfect sunset.

Next on my list reads: Eat a delicious dinner in Ireland.

"OK!" I announce, and fly to my favorite restaurant, called "Chapter One." After gobbling down my apple tart, my stomach is full and I pull out mu list to check off task number four. Last on the list says to go back home.

When I arrive home, the sun has already fallen asleep, and the moon has woken up.

After getting in my shamrock pajamas on, I hope into bed thinking about the amazing day I had. After going through the events in my head, I realize I will lose my magic tonight and have to go back to school tomorrow. Awwww, man!!

"My Lucky Day!"

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, my authors wrote a story about having the luckiest day ever!  What would their day look like if they...

~ couldn't get hurt

~couldn't lose

~ couldn't get into trouble!

The students were tasked with creatively coming up with an idea of how they would get their luck, and then undoing it at the end of their story.

There were some definite common themes.  I learned who wanted pets but had parents who said "no," and I learned a lot about the desired amount of screen time and money in pockets!! I also learned about favorite activities and people in my students' lives.  And favorite snacks and desserts definitely were mentioned! (Nobody got in trouble for having dessert before dinner!) Enjoy these samples from across the grades!

My Lucky Day, by Cora (3rd grade)

One day I was on a walk, and I came across a field of clovers that were all four-leaf clovers!! Suddenly, a small person popped out from the field: a leprechaun! He told me that humans weren't supposed to see the field, and I would have to meet him back here at the end of the day so he could undo the magic.

When I got home, I decided to test my luck and asked my mom if I could build an attic. My mom said it was okay if I was careful, and I couldn't believe my ears! I ran into the garage and collected the supplies. Then I climbed up on the roof and started building. It ended up like a tent, but it was warm and cozy.

Later I demanded my sister to get me ice cream for lunch. "What flavor?" she asked sweetly. Since my luck was working so well, I told her, "All of them!" She dashed inside and soon came back with a huge rainbow bowl of ice cream. I started to eat my ice cream, and once I finished, I didn't get a brain freeze or a stomach ache!

I wanted to explore the town a bit before the day was over, and I was too tired to walk or bike. I knew I could just ask my mom to borrow her car, but she knows I can't drive and I wouldn't want to risk my luck. So of course I went to buy my own car. I only had $10, and I was hoping that my luck would make it cheap. Once I got there, I looked for the best car. There was a Tesla for $5, 99% off! This felt like a dream! I bought the car and pefectly drove out of the store like a pro.

I looked at the time, and the sun was starting to set. I decided it was time to go back to the field, but with my extra $5, I decided to get ice cream for dinner, too. After ice cream, I drove to the field of clovers, got out, and stared at the leprechaun. The leprechaun stared at me. And just as I was about to say "hello," the leprechaun lifted his arm and ZAP! My Tesla was gone. I asked my sister about the ice cream, and she didn't have a clue. My luck was gone!

My Lucky Day, by Vivia (4th grade)

One morning, I was walking my dog Dasher when suddenly he started rapidly barking to get my attention.  I looked where he was sniffing, and I found a perfectly good frosted cake! I immediately knew today would be my luckiest day yet.

First, I convinced my parents to buy me a scratch lottery ticket.  I won!  I'm rich! I gave it to the cashier and got one million dollars!

I was about to leave for school when my mom stopped me.  "School was mysteriously canceled, and no one knows why."  I grinned.  I played table tennis with my brother for thirty minutes.

I decided to test my luck. I went to my parents. "Can we go to Great America?" I asked.  They agreed! I rode scary roller coasters, fast water rides, and ate ice cream.

I took my dog out on an evening walk, feeling very lucky, when suddenly, the sun set.  Dasher started barking again, but this time I saw a big plate of disgusting vegetables! I knew my lucky day was over as quickly as it started.

My Lucky Day by Audrey (5th grade)

It was March 17th and I was just getting out of bed. My mom exclaimed, “We’re going to the Chinese restaurant today.”

“Yay!” I rejoiced. This was going to be a great day.

After the delicious lunch, of course we got our fortune cookies. I opened the wrapper and crunched the cookie. I was so surprised at my fortune. It said, “You will have all the luck in the world for 24 hours. You can’t get hurt and you can’t lose.

I had a swim meet later, so I decided to test my luck. As I dove into the pool, I knew something was different about this race. As I touched the wall, I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that I came in first. I realized that this was going to be my lucky day after all! Three races later, I was walking to my car with a handful of ribbons.

When I got home, a mysterious, small box was lying in front of the door. The wrapper was completely gold. I quickly opened it and inside I found a million stuffed animals and other things I adore. All those things couldn’t possibly have fit in the box! Squished in the bottom was a little note that said, “Go to Diamond Shores and you can swim with hammerhead, lemon, mako, leopard, and whale sharks.”

“Oh my gosh!!!! Is this really true?” I screamed. “And I don’t even have to change out of my swimsuit!” I quickly began to pack for my trip to the beach. My mom drove me to Diamond Shores, but on the way we stopped to buy an underwater camera. I was so glad I had it, because I took so many amazing pictures. There was even a frozen yogurt shop at the beach! I got mango swirl with coconut flakes on top, and because it was my lucky day, my mom said I could have an extra large size!.

When I got home, I took a nice, relaxing shower. Then I had to get ready to go out to a 5 star restaurant. I picked a gorgeous red dress and a white head band to pair with it. The food was exceptional! Just as I was leaving the restaurant, the waitress gave me a box that said “Unlimited Caramel.” I thanked her for the gift. I opened the box on the car ride home and ate a few pieces. It was so smooth and it dissolved in my mouth. It was like eating delicious clouds!

When I came back from the restaurant, I was ready for my last adventure: going heliskiing. On the way to the ski resort, I took a nap. When I got there, I suited up and flew away in a helicopter! The snow was so fresh and powdery. I loved skiing through the trees. I skied all the way down to the village to go get some Chinese food for dinner.

I got seated at a table and I got the best fried rice in the world. There were carrots, shrimp, and peas. Of course I got my fortune cookie. I opened the wrapper and ate the cookie. My fortune said, “Your 24 hours has expired.” I was so sad, but my day was quintessential! I hope something like this happens next St. Patrick's Day.

The Ketchup Clover

By: Allison (6th grade)

This morning, I yawned, and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. My room was messier than usual. There were small green footprints on my floor, and grass littered the carpet under my bed. I rolled out of bed and almost hit my head on the table when I spotted something on my desk that wasn’t there yesterday. A green four leaf clover sat there with the words “Good Luck” written in ketchup on my desk.

Maybe I was seeing things, but my whole room had little green footprints and ketchup on the floor. I ran to the bathroom and even my face had green paint on it. My Monday was becoming a disaster.

I got dressed, wiped the green off my face, and went to clean my room. Even after using alcohol wipes, my room lingered of the ketchup essence.

Rushing to school because I was already late, I tried to find my socks, but the only ones that were in my basket were neon green. Not very matching with my dark green uniform.

The car sped down the road, green lights every time. Was this a sign?

At school, we had tests in every class except for PE. In History, I summarized the Civil War perfectly and even got extra credit. In Math, I aced geometric shapes and linear equations. Even in Art I could draw things that weren’t stick figures. Ms. Beverly was so impressed with me that she let me teach the class.

I checked my grades in Language Arts after taking my quiz, and to my surprise, the grades were all above 95%. In Math I had 102%! How was this even possible? Maybe the ketchup stain on my white desk was worth it.

In PE, we had to play basketball, and I was not excited. I was the worst one in my grade. I can’t even shoot! I’ll give this new-found luck a try.

I did a crossover and dribbled with precision. Then, I shot the ball. It sailed in the air as if in slow motion and it circled around the rim. Finally, it fell in. My team cheered and for once I didn’t feel useless. They cheered and I felt cool. Really cool. They all wanted me on their team.

After PE in Grammar, I was sweating, yet so sleepy. The worst feeling to have. I would’ve loved to sleep earlier at 8 o’clock, but i can never fall asleep at that time.

At home, after homework, dinner, and showering. It was 8:30, still too early to sleep, but I tried anyway. I started getting drowsy and my eyes started to close. Soon after, I was fast asleep, probably snoring aloud.

I woke up, not in the morning, but in the middle of the night. On the four leaf clover, one of the leaves started wilting. I picked it up and it fell. I put it up to my nose and… Yup. It smelled like ketchup

Oh well, I guess all good things come to an end. I was grateful for all that I got to experience today. The happiness I felt today was unimaginable. I guess this was what unlimited luck felt like!

Lucky Day!

The week of St. Patrick's Day, I proposed a story line to my students:

What if they had all the luck in the world?  Nothing could go wrong.  They couldn't lose, get hurt, or get in trouble.  What would their day look like?

After a brief story map of beginning, middle, and end, the students wrote short stories from the 1st person perspective.  They had to come up with a creative way to receive their luck, and tell the reader how they knew their luck was over.

I thought it was neat to see that there are some types of luck that all students would want if they had the chance! See if you can spot the similar themes.  Enjoy these samples from across the grades!

My Lucky Day, by Momo (2nd grade)

One St. Patrick's Day, I found a four leaf clover, and inside the four leaf clover was a leprechaun!  He gave me a wish.  I wished for him to distract my parents, so they couldn't notice that I was watching TV.  I watched my favorite movies, and even popped some popcorn.  Also, I got a phone call that my friend Sara also had a lucky day.

I knew my luck was over when the leprechaun ran away.

Lucky Day, by Yanbing (4th grade)

One morning, I was walking in a forest and saw a flash of light.  I went to the light, and there was a leprechaun!  He threw me a golden coin, and it hit me in the head.  It didn't hurt!  I knew this was going to be my luckiest day yet!

First, I was going to try volleyball.  I did all the moves and, surprisingly, I did them all very well!  My mom said, "When did you become so good?"  But I didn't tell her the secret.

Next, I asked my mom if I could do anything I wanted.  My mom said, "Of course!  Why didn't you ask sooner?"  I played for about an hour, then I decided to drive my car.  I brought some money, and I drove anywhere I desired.  I ate at restaurants, went to ice cream stores, and finally came back.

When I came back, I wanted to make Puff, my cat, like me.  I picked her up, and amazingly, she din't struggle!  She even licked my hand!  I watched a movie with her on my lap, and checked the time.  7:30.  So I still had a lot of time left!

I convinced my parents to buy me a scratch lottery ticket.  I scratched it off.  "Aw, man... wait.... I'm rich!  I'm RICH!"  I gave it to the cashier, and got ten billion dollars.  Now I was really rich!

Next, I persuaded my parents to cancel today's music practice.  I went to my room and played all I could.

But then, the sun set, and suddenly, my luck was gone!

Lucky Day, by Charlize (5th grade)

One day, a small, weird dude came up to me and poured gold sparkles on my toes.  I suspected he was a lephrechaun .  But, I didn't know why the heck he would pour gold sparkles on my toes.

"You shall have all the good luck in the world for 24 hours.  I will come back here when the day is done."

"Thank you!" I shouted back as he walked away.

Since the whole day would bring good luck, I decided to enter the lottery.  I set my goal on a million bucks.

I entered, and as I scratched the ticket, I feared that the magic would not work.  But then I won!  I ran to the cashier, and then he gave me my money.  I walked home to put my money in my room.

I decided to test my luck some more, so I went to the gym and did some super hard gymnastics.  I did a back tuck (back flip).  Then, as I flipped in the air, I was scared to land.  But then my feet touched the ground and I landed.  Of course I did, with my good luck!  I did some more.  I went on the bars, beam, and lastly, the vault.  With all my luck, I never got hurt.  After gymnastics, I went to the field for some soccer with my friends.

Soccer with friends went swimmingly.  My team and I were playing, and the game was tied 5-5.  Then, I shot the winning goal!  "SCCCOOOORRREE!" my team and I shouted.  The other team congratulated us as we complimented them.  Aftre the game, I went home to a surprise.

The leprechaun had come back.  I knew what that meant: my lucky day had come to an end.  The leprechaun poured black sparkles on my toes like he had promised.

"Your lucky day has come to an end!" he said.

"I understand," I admitted sorrowfully.  "But thank you for your offer," I said with grace.

"Good bye!" the leprechaun said, as he ran off into the forest.

I went home.  Sad, but I had to admit, I had an amazing day.

My Lucky Day

by Anay (5th grade)

On February 29th, I got infinite luck from a magical four leaf clover bush, which disappeared as soon as I tried to pick it. Here is what I did on my special day!

First, I was in San Diego for the Surf Cup Tournament and I destroyed all the soccer teams in the tournament, 100-0. The teams we played were supposed to be the best in the country, but I scored 75 goals and got 25 assists per game, so I was the Most Valuable Player!!

Next, I went home after an easy day of winning the hardest tournament and started to play Hypixel Skyblock. I defeated 100 Revenant Horror Tier 5s and obtained 100 Warden Hearts. I completed 1,000 Floor 6 and 7 runs and luckily attained all the best RNG drops, completed 100 runs of Master Mode 7 and got Shiny Wither Pieces, Shiny Necron’s Handles, and Dark Claymore. Then, I decided to start up some speed runs because of my luck and guess what? I destroyed the record by 5 minutes! So finally, I played Hypixel Bedwars and got #1 in all the leaderboards and beat Manhal_IQ in a 1v1.

Finally, I entered one lottery ticket for every lottery in the world, which was about $500,000,000 average per lottery, and I won all of them! At that point, I was confused about my luck, and was starting to think I could do anything… including becoming the richest person in the world who has a net worth of 420 billion dollars.

Finally, when the day was about to end, I decided to go zip lining.  BUT….

At that exact moment…

I felt a feeling I hadn’t experienced all day: FEAR. I intrinsically knew that my luck had ended. I got to keep everything from my lucky day, so that was a big plus!

And I’m really glad I didn’t go zip lining, because who knows what could’ve happened?!
